The majestic Red Fort, or Lal Qila, was built in 1638 by Shah Jahan and remains a prime symbol of Mughal power. Constructed from red sandstone, this fortress is not only visually stunning but also historically significant. It’s the site where India’s Prime Minister delivers the annual Independence Day address. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007, the fort attracts countless visitors each year.
The Jama Masjid, built by Shah Jahan in 1656, is India’s largest mosque. With its white marble domes and spacious courtyard, it can host up to 25,000 worshippers. Its Mughal architecture and serene ambience make it a must-see. After visiting the mosque, take a rickshaw ride through Old Delhi's historic alleys, passing vibrant markets like Chandni Chowk and Khari Baoli—the latter being Asia's largest spice market, known for its fragrant variety and traditional charm.
This towering war memorial, designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, honors Indian soldiers who perished in World War I and the Afghan Wars. Names of fallen heroes are etched into the arch, making it a solemn but inspiring national symbol. India Gate is both a popular gathering spot and an emblem of India's proud military legacy.
Built between 1562 and 1570 by Haji Begum, the wife of Emperor Humayun, this mausoleum is an early example of Mughal garden tomb architecture. Designed by Persian architect Mirak Mirza Ghiyas, the site reflects Persian influence and grandeur. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it remains a peaceful retreat with lush gardens and elegant domes.
Famed for its flower-like shape, the Lotus Temple (Baháʼí House of Worship) is open to all faiths. With its serene atmosphere and stunning marble architecture, it offers a spiritual escape from the city's bustle. The temple encourages prayer, meditation, and reflection in a tranquil setting.
Standing 73 meters tall, the Qutub Minar was begun in 1199 by Qutub-ud-din Aibak and completed by his successor Iltutmish. This red sandstone minaret is intricately inscribed with verses from the Quran and showcases early Indo-Islamic architecture. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is a highlight of Delhi’s medieval heritage.
